‘Marbling’ Technique with acrylic paint

I discovered the technique of marbling while still studying Foundation courses before university.

The actual term “marbling” refers to the technique of when a paper or cloth is coloured by placing it on paint that floats like oil on the surface of the water (click here to read more on wiki).

For me, this technique was quite problematic to do at the time, because it required specific materials to produce the desired effect, so the results obtained by my experimental methods were very unpredictable.

After this experience, I had the idea to dilute acrylic paint with water so much (roughly like a thick cream) that it would be possible to move around the colours with the stick (or some other tool). Although there were surprises even then (dark paint somehow drowned, and the bright rose up and floated on the surface), I was very pleased with this discovered technique. Since then, I quite often use it in my work as an artistic tool to convey decorativeness, intangibility, as well as water and air elements.
