Dragon and Owls in The Forest

During our creative session, I showed sisters Evija (8 years old) and Adele (6 years old) how to draw with pipettes and paint, and they showed me how to paint by blowing paint with straw.
With these techniques, Adele created a spectacular landscape. We decided that there were trees and that, in a fairy tale, she would be an owl in the forest.

Evija transformed her work several times. At first it looked like a bird, but during the acting, Evija decided to be a dragon.

2. Evija - "Dragon"

In the tale, Evija was a dragon flying through the woods, and Adele and Gabrielis (the cousin of the sisters) were owls. The dragon was injured. Gabrielis, while he was flying, saw the wounded dragon and flew in to call Adele to help heal him. Both owls came over and healed the wounded dragon.

Out of all fairy tales, I left this one the last as it was the hardest one to create illustrations for. The biggest challenge was to create an animal-human hybrid. They had to appear original. Beside that, both the child and the animal have to be recognisable. So this required some research online and a lot of sketching.

I didn’t find particularly original example of dragon-human images so I just came up with my own version.

The owl was a bit more challenging because this famous bird is recognised mainly from the big round eyes and a flat face. If I draw a bird with owl’s body, it will appear like a girl-bird hybrid. If I draw on the girl’s face big round eyes, the portraits of Adele and Gabrielis may not be recognisable anymore. Thankfully, I found good examples online how I could combine owl and human feature without losing too much one or the other.
